About the exhibition:

Refik Anadol, the star creator of immersive installations generated by artificial intelligence (AI), is exhibiting solo for the first time in Hungary. In 2023, he transformed the Las Vegas Sphere into the world’s largest AI-generated artwork. Simultaneously, his swirling, mesmerizing light show captivated audiences at New York’s MOMA for an entire year. At the end of the year, Anadol made the Grammy Gala unforgettable with his spectacular stage visuals.

This August, the acclaimed Turkish multimedia artist’s video work “Rumi Dreams” will be presented in Debrecen. Since the early 2010s, Refik Anadol has lived in Los Angeles and is a pioneering Turkish digital/new media artist recognized internationally for his applications of AI in art. His large-scale works have been showcased worldwide, from airports to concert halls, public spaces to renowned contemporary museums, including locations such as Charlotte, North Carolina; the Venice Biennale; Istanbul; Seoul; and Melbourne. The Istanbul-born, US-based artist will present his grand-scale video work “Rumi Dreams,” which requires a 32 m² LED wall, at MODEM. The piece is dedicated to Mevlana Jallaludin Rumi, a 13th-century poet, philosopher, scholar, and Sufi mystic who lived in Anatolia. The exhibition aims to illustrate how digital and traditional art can be combined to create an immersive experience. “Rumi Dreams” is also part of MODEM’s projects that form alliances with literature, a significant element of Debrecen’s cultural identity, offering new opportunities for interactions between different art forms.

Our main supporters in the realization of the exhibit are Synergy Construction Hungary Ltd. and the Yapi Merkezi.

Additional sponsors include Lounge Media Group, Maison Aux Pois, Special Effects Ltd., Swicongroup, and Wizz Air Holdings Plc.

As part of the Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year 2024, announced on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Turkish-Hungarian diplomatic relations, and the 58th Debrecen Flower Carnival, the exhibition of world-renowned Turkish media artist Refik Anadol at MODEM will be a highly significant event.
