Under Natural Circumstances – Contemporary Art from Transylvania

2008. May. 30. - 2008. Jul. 13.

The exhibition presented the works of ten contemporary Romanian artists. With one exception, the artists live in Transylvania and are strongly connected to the cultural phenomena and institutions there, especially Cluj-Napoca, which is the defining center of contemporary visual arts in Romania. The artists favor traditional forms of expression, especially painting and graphic art. Although belonging to different generations, they all show a fascination with the natural (or more precisely, its manifestations: landscape, organic systems, desire or the social use and critique of everyday things), mostly representing the possibility of a natural manifestation becoming a cultural phenomenon, thus laying the foundations for expressions of personal creativity. Most of the exhibiting artists can be associated with the “Cluj School of Painting”, which has gained international fame in recent years. This grouping, whose main intellectual initiator is Ioan Sbârciu, is not a formalistic manifestation of a painting style, but rather a manifestation of a spirit, a spirit whose main characteristic is a strong belief in the place of traditional artistic means of mediation in the contemporary art scene.
