Social realist – The painting of the 1950’s
2008. Jul. 11. - 2008. Nov. 07.
Entitled Social Realism – Painting in the Rákosi Era, the exhibition held at Modem in 2008 presented the official painting of the early 1950s and was created with the intention of dusting off the long-forgotten works of art of that period. In addition to more than a hundred paintings, most of them large-scale, the exhibition also featured several contemporary sculptures. The exhibition can be considered the first major historical review of Hungarian socialist realist art. Modem published a 78-page catalog in Hungarian and English, containing mainly color reproductions, written and edited by the exhibition’s curator, Gábor Reider.
