Carousel. Photo exhibition by Erwin Olaf

2014. Oct. 26. - 2015. Feb. 01.

Visitors of the Carousel exhibition saw not documentary photographs but staged scenes. Walking through the pictures in the exhibition, Erwin Olaf said that many of the costumes were made for the photos, which should not have been thrown away. And so the carousel, which gives the exhibition its name, was born, ominously carrying headless figures of children in a circle instead of horses and carriages. In the centre, a blindfolded clown watches, in some interpretations taking on the role of a vigilante. And justice is necessary in our world today, as the Berlin series focuses on the violence that rears its head wherever it goes. The images depict the dialogue and conflict between children and adults. The artist strives to create authentic environments for his photographs, and in this case he has also taken his pictures in the German capital.
