Kristóf József Balogh’s solo exhibtionKristóf József Balogh, born in Debrecen and currently living and working in Budapest, is realizing his first institutional solo exhibition, which will be held in the newly launched Project Space of the MODEM Center of Modern and Contemporary Art.
While the painterly qualities might trick the viewers, Balogh’s source materials are screen photos of eerie incidents where one doesn’t exactly know what is going on. This diverse visual collection employs a wide spectrum of references and engages in playful manipulation. The artist’s new anecdotal series of paintings, prepared for the exhibition, often involve unexpected shifts between cartoon characters, animals, and human figures. These changes can be seen as references to the fluidity of identity on one hand, and on the other hand, they enhance the intensity of abstract thinking and storytelling. The opaque acrylic paintings are often difficult to connect, further intensifying the abstraction of their representation and narrative structure. Balogh’s aim is not to encourage tranquil contemplation in viewers but rather to create a receptive situation where viewers can react immediately to the images devoid of their original contexts.
