The Other Venus. Drozdik Orshi’s exhibition
2011. Oct. 09. - 2012. Jan. 15.
Drozdik started out in the post-conceptualist milieu of Hungary, yet his art can be understood in the light of the post-structuralist discourse he had learned during his emigration. Theoretical research, the theoretical demand and use of language, as well as the manifestation of this in the work are the defining methods of his creative activity. As a result, he unfolds a theme in a myriad of variations in order to show as many aspects of the problem as possible by going round it.
The starting point for his art can be traced back to the mid-1970s, when, as a student at the College of Fine Arts, he began to explore the idea of individual mythology. He used this term to describe his own values, which he had to assert in a patriarchal social and artistic context. The problem of social gender, the difference between the male and the female gaze, was first raised in him in the context of nude drawing, which he considered to be the basis of classical art education. The search for the female perspective and the definition of the identity of the female artist is also strongly intertwined with the examination of the relationship between power and representation.
The Other Venus Drozdik’s debut at MODEM. The exhibition, thematically selected, recomposed to take into account the specificities of the exhibition space, and composed of works shown for the first time, sheds light on the struggling history of the art of the other vision, and offers new experiences.
