Works from the Antal–Lusztig Collection. Return – The Pécs Selection, and A Cross-section of an Oeuvre: István Nagy.

2009. Jan. 16. - 2009. May. 03.

A personal art collection is a self-portrait, ultimately a mirror. Collecting is a way of life. When a career or collecting activity comes to an end, the image in the mirror becomes fixed, and the quality of the memory image is associated with its documentary nature. Whether we encounter the sovereign collector’s achievement in this way or that, there can be no doubt that the collection is a work of art. This is much more obvious than museum collections compiled with scientific method and the need for historical representation.

A separate section of the exhibition was entitled A Cross-section of an Oeuvre: István Nagy. István Nagy (1873–1937), born in Szeklerland, built his unique oeuvre far from the fashions of academia and art trade, ignoring the isms. His painting is one of the greatest achievements of Hungarian art. He is one of our most outstanding realist painters, whose art is both archaic and modern.
