Interreg Romania – Hungary

We are pleased to inform our audience that MODEM and its partner in Timișoara, FABER, are embarking on a large-scale joint project within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary program, with the support of the European Union.

The Translocal Matters: Socially engaged arts and design on the borderlands (TRANSMAT) project is dedicated to addressing shared challenges in two mid-scale regional cities situated less than 300 km from each other, in an agricultural background that was heavily industrialised in the past century, with a notable growth in the past decades. These cities face similar territorial issues, such as an educated population with limited interest in non-conservatory cultural narratives. The project strategically intersects traditional and contemporary reflections on contextual economic development, seeking to employ art and design as catalysts for positive societal change. By fostering knowledge, creativity, inter-professional and inter-cultural collaboration and critical capacity, TRANSMAT tackles identified challenges while embracing opportunities.

The project will use actions based on the methodology of capacity building, exchanging of experiences among cross-border actors supporting the green and digital transformation, the resiliency and sustainability along the borderlands between Debrecen and Timisoara; Secondly the project will highlight the needs of building up intercultural and transcultural ties with local stakeholders (authorities, education and public institutions, inhabitants in the cities and along the regions etc.) using tools of joint events, cultural initiatives.

A program’s value goes beyond its professional and artistic relevance: it also makes it possible to carry out a significant investment in upgrading MODEM’s lighting and HVAC systems.

In summary, the TRANSMAT project is a unique opportunity for MODEM and FABER to address shared challenges and leverage common opportunities. By integrating traditional and contemporary approaches, the project aims to create lasting impacts, strengthen institutions, and contribute to the cultural and economic development of the participating cities. This aligns seamlessly with the EU’s objectives for sustainable growth and cultural diversity within the Romania-Hungary.

The duration of the project: 3rd of November 2025. – 3rd of May 2028.

Amount of European Regional Development Fund support for MODEM: 59,83% (1.047.220,70 EUR)

Total project budget: 2.500.326,98 EUR
