Screening and discussion with Gallai Judit Ágnes and Váczi Lilla
2023. Nov. 29. 16:30
As part of the Social Acupuncture series of events, two artists living and working in Debrecen, Judit Ágnes Gallai and Lilla Váczi, will screen works from the MODEM collection that are related to the city. The films of two artists, Judit Ágnes Gallai, Fire, Water, Flying, 2019 and Lilla Váczi: Zsibogó III.2017, present different public spaces of the city through a personal and an observational narrative. After the screening, a discussion will take place between the artists and the curator of the programme, Krisztián Gábor Török, on the artistic relationship between personal approaches to urban public spaces and what it means to work site-specifically.
Judit Ágnes GALLAI: Fire, Water, Flying, 2019
Video performance, 9’05”
“Fire, Water, Flying is a kindergarten game in which the participants run around in circles. When they hear the word ‘fire’ they jump down, when they hear the word ‘water’ they climb up somewhere, when they hear the word ‘flying’ they jump down. Each of these movements is a reaction to the detection of danger. In the video, I visit the sites of my childhood traumas in Debrecen, which remind me of the constant sense of danger. The performance is an attempt to release these traumas.”
Lilla VÁCZI: Zsibogó III, 2017
video, 11’31”
“I’ve wanted to work on the theme of the zhibi for a long time, as a child I used to go out with my parents quite a lot. I wanted to revive that. I hadn’t been out for years and I was curious to see what had happened since then. My dad and I used to spend a lot of Sunday mornings there, because that’s when the technical stuff came in, and he likes to tinker, to boo technical things. I also wanted a subject that had something to do with Debrecen. The first phase of the work was the field survey. I went out and took a few photos with my mobile phone, but they didn’t give a complete picture. I felt it was important to add some human element, so we started talking to the vendors while taking photos. There was one woman who had been selling there for 30 years, who else knew better what life was like there. I felt the interviews gave it all credibility.”
The films are presented in their original language with English subtitles.
Please note that this event is free of charge and can be attended without a ticket.
The event will take place at the MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, Multimedia Hall 3 floor , 4026 Debrecen, Hunyadi János u. 1-3
The event Social Acupuncture is part of the MODEM Modern and Contemporary Art Centre’s community programme, launched in March 2023, which explores the issue of well-being in Debrecen through culture. Going beyond the scientific understanding of health, Social Acupuncture focuses in a holistic way on the elements that affect the wholeness of the lives of the city’s inhabitants.
